Pain at the Pump With or Without Little Green |
TOP |
With the price of gas going sky high, there is a new product called the "little green pill." BioPerformance Fuel markets the pill. BioPerformance claims drivers will see a 25 percent increase in their gas mileage. An Orlando TV station investigation found the pill was too good to be true. WESH TV recruited Dr. Robert Hoekstra. His lab at the college tests race car engines. He put a couple of pills in the gas tank of a minivan, tested it on a treadmill for cars and found "statistically zero increase in performance." Tests by a UCF chemistry professor declared the pill toxic. Click for more |
Reducing Energy Costs |

Mechanical engineering Professor Dr. Jayanta Kapat has secured $2.76 million from NASA to address technical challenges associated with the use of synthetic liquid fuels in turbine sections of aviation engines as well as in airplane auxiliary power units. The technology to be developed will equally apply for land-based power generation and distributed generation for grid-independence at critical installations. This synthetic fuel can be generated from coal or biomass, each of which is abundant in this country. It is Dr. Kapat's hope that his research will lead to "newer technologies that would not only lessen dependence on foreign energy sources, but would also reduce airline ticket prices and utility bills". National Geographic Seeks Hurricane Related Answers from Us |

About 2,500 people died in 1928 when water from Florida's Lake Okeechobee inundated their communities during a hurricane, making it one of the worst natural disasters in United States history.
Hurricanes have crossed or passed near the lake since the 1928 disaster. None of the storms has penetrated the massive dike or pushed water over its top. But the dike has begun to leak.
The leaks and recent active hurricane seasons have caused lakeside residents to keep a closer eye on the dike. Could tragedy strike again? National Geographic news wanted to know, so they turned to Civil and Environmental Engineering national storm surge expert Dr. Scott Hagen, who said it's unlikely the dike will fail because of a hurricane.
"If they keep the water at the appropriate level in Lake Okeechobee, the chances of having water surging up and over the dike are very, very low," he said. Click for more.

UCF's Efforts to Retain, Educate Hispanic Students Among Best |
TOP |
As the Hispanic population booms in Central Florida, the University of Central Florida continues to make strides to recruit, retain and graduate Hispanic students.
That's why Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine has named UCF one of the best 100 colleges in the United States for Hispanic students.
The magazine for college educators ranked UCF 16th in its list of universities that help Hispanic students earn bachelor's degrees. The university moved up three spots from last year. And, for the first time, UCF was named among the best for helping Hispanic students earn doctorates, ranking 83rd. Click for more.

The college hosted the first annual Florida Engineering Education Conference designed to grow the engineering and high-tech workforce. Pre-college teachers, administrators, industry and engineering organizations met to share what has been accomplished to prepare K-12 students for an engineering education. "Twenty moderators and panelists presented a diverse range of important topics to 120 attendees," said Bruce Furino, Director of Educational Partnerships and conference organizer.
Conference participants valued the conference enough to encourage a two day session in 2007. |

A record 278 elementary, middle and high school student teams from 10 states participated in the annual Internet Science and Technology Fair. 220 student teams completed their final project websites, participated in the preliminary round of judging and 63 teams advanced to the final round of judging. Seven student teams from schools in New Jersey, Michigan and Florida emerged from the final round of judging to capture top awards in the 9th annual Internet Science and Technology Fair (ISTF). The program challenges students to use National Critical Technology (NCT) applications to solve real-world problems using information technology tools. Students develop critical thinking skills as they work on-line with practicing professionals and publish their final research findings in a webpage format.

Former college dean, Dr. Robert Kersten, is now a member of an elite group. The American Society of Civil Engineers has elected Dr. Kersten to the grade of Honorary Member. Only 555 people have received this honor in the 153 year history of the American Society of Civil Engineers. It goes to a person "who has attained acknowledged eminence in some branch of engineering related thereto, including the fields of engineering education and construction." Congratulations, Dr. Kersten!
