FEATURED STORIES

Reducing Fuel Costs and Getting NASA Back to the Moon

Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE) is on the path to receive twelve million dollars from the federal government. MMAE has received its first of three million dollar renewable federal grants and may apply for three more. The money will be used to improve and advance performance of gas turbine engines in all aircraft, develop power generation systems to power future space vehicles and lunar rovers and to have better equipment in labs for undergraduate and graduate student research and teaching. No One Has Done it Better

UCF Pep Band Fundraising total $187,821.78Faculty and staff members at the College of Engineering and Computer Science demonstrated their belief in their college by going above and beyond during the college’s first organized faculty and staff campaign last fall. Together they raised close to $190,000 during the three-week, volunteer-driven fundraising drive called Building Upon a Solid Foundation, nearly doubling the $100,000 goal. The money will go toward student scholarships, lab enhancements, funding for conference attendance and other important items state funding does not provide.

Progress Energy Partnership Working Hard On Soft Skills

Recognizing an industry demand that graduating engineers must possess sound technical and leadership skills, the college will launch the Progress Energy Leadership and Management Institute in fall 2006.

The Progress Energy Leadership & Management Institute will combine the new Engineering Leadership & Management Minor with a nine month experiential program that will include a self-assessment of leadership skills and traits, conflict management, verbal and written communications, situational leadership, diversity training, strategic planning, networking, risk taking, business and social etiquette, ethics and values in leadership, leadership team development and more. College Teams with Top Video Game Producer

The producers of the Madden NFL interactive video Electronic Arts Tiburon Logo
games and the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS) have created a partnership. Electronic Arts' primary interest in the school is hiring talented students to work at its rapidly growing Orlando Studio. “Many of EA Tiburon’s employees are graduates of UCF and we expect to hire many more UCF alums as we expand the size of our workforce,” said Steve Chiang, EA Tiburon’s Vice President and Studio General Manager.  “This partnership ensures that our studio will continue to offer opportunities to the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science’s best and brightest, while the school and its students will be able to benefit from invaluable real-world experience through internships.” Click for more

Saving Lives and Money

The College’s Center for Advanced Transportation Systems Simulation (CATSS) hosted a major three day Driving Simulation Conference. The conference focused on simulation applications designed to save lives and money and to better understand how drivers react to traffic congestion, frustration and perform using cell phones and global positioning systems (GPS). Student Computer Programming Team Dominates

The college’s 23-year-old record of "top three in the southeast"
continues. UCF’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science student programming team finished second in the Southeast Regional in Melbourne, Florida. Faculty advisor Dr. Ali Orooji says “out of more than 6,000 teams from 75 countries, UCF is one of only 80 teams advancing to the World Championship round in April.” Click for more

The Alumni Chapter Annual Event No Longer a Mystery

The College Alumni Chapter themed event, High Tech CSI: UCF Orlando, was an action packed evening of "FUN"draising and crime solving. The Harris Corporation Partnership Atrium in Engineering II became a scene for dinner, silent auction, and detective work. High Tech CSI: UCF Orlando added at least $10,000 to the chapter's $270,000 endowment for student scholarships. Thank you High Tech co-chair's Linda Flannery, '86 and Jennifer McDaniel, '89. Giving to the College is Now A "Click" Away

Each year hundreds of alumni and friends express their support and interest in the people and programs of the College of Engineering & Computer Science by making a donation. These gifts touch every corner of the college providing funds for scholarships and graduate fellowships, student and faculty research projects, course development, and other academic initiatives.

Now your gift can be made with ease through our new on-line giving. Just click on the link under Quick Links in the left column of this news letter. Thank you!

Developing Water Purification System for Hurricane Relief

At the request of the National Science Foundation (NSF) two of our researchers are fast tracking development of a unique water purification system to aid victims of hurricane Katrina and other disasters.

The professors were awarded a $10,000 startup grant from NSF to support research that can directly benefit those affected by Katrina. The agency is also encouraging the scientists to connect the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other agencies directly tied to disaster relief for immediate application of any useable technology. Welcome to Digital Universe

The Director of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Dr. Issa Batarseh, recognizes that "Students of all majors need to know the fundamentals of technology, just like the fundamentals of math and science". But he believes "they lack the fundamental knowledge of how this technology is implemented."  The School will begin offering an elective course called Introduction to the Digital Universe to all UCF freshmen in the fall 2006.  Several high tech topics will be covered: working with computers, MP3, I Pods, internet, digital imaging and video, and music work. It's believed UCF is the first university to offer such a course.

First Time Ever

The College of Engineering and Computer Science is the first college to offer an on site Ph.D. program at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Industrial Engineering and Management Systems (IEMS) will offer a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering and Integration in Fall 06. Department chair Dr. Lesia Crumpton-Young says the program is targeted to working professionals “to assist their growth and development and to enhance their career.”

Finishing First and Second

The college’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Student Chapter has been named the second best Hispanic Chapter. Georgia Tech received top honors. The honors were announced at a conference in Philadelphia. Former UCF Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers President Nicolas Zamora won the Pedro Ortiz Student Leadership Award. Click for more
